Reuben Isaac was mainly brought up in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, but has also lived in London and Florida during his early childhood. Growing up he learned how to play the piano from his mom, who was a successful singer in a classical choir. At age 14 he picked up a guitar and started writing his own songs, this lead to independently recording 3 CD’s of original music by the time he turned 16.
The Rotterdam-born artist had quite a tumultuous start to his music career. His first official release as a producer called Mad Over You by Nana Fofie quickly went viral after the release, gaining the attention of international artists like Nicki Minaj and Mr Eazi. Who reached out after hearing the track, launching Reubens career as a successful producer.
The Isaac in his name “Isaac” refers to his father, who passed away when Reuben was 18 years old. This event shaped Reuben’s life, urging him to take responsibility over his Stepmom and brother early on. This sense of responsibility instilled a drive in Reuben to repay the confidence his father always had in him and his music.
Reuben’s musical influences range from bands like Bloc Party and Nirvana to contemporary R&B artists such as Dijon, Dominic Fike and Frank Ocean. On top of that there’s also influences from African artists like Maleek Berry, Wizkid and Burna Boy. These artists share the same roots as Reuben (Nigerian), which plays a big role in inspiring him.
Now, a little over 2 years later, after months of teasing snippets of solo music on his social media, there’s finally a release date for Reuben Isaac’s first single California as a solo artist.
California is a mellow, guitar driven song, inspired by a story Isaac one morning read in an Instagram comment, about a middle aged man’s heartbreak. The song is upbeat and almost happy but simultaneously mellow and nearly melancholic as the story illustrates a man who is willing to give up everything for love, to no avail.
